Praying With The Church: Following Jesus Daily, Hourly, Today

Scot McKnight, Paraclete Press, 2006

Scot McKnight invites readers to get closer to the heart of Jesus' message by discovering the ancient rhythms of daily prayer at the heart of the early church.  Praying with the Church is written for all Christians who desire to know more about the ancient devotional traditions of the Christian faith, and to become involved in their renaissance today.  Scot invites readers to explore: -How Jesus prayed -How the Psalms teach us to pray -How Orthodox Christians pray -How Roman Catholics pray -How Anglicans pray -How The Divine Hours of Phyllis Tickle teaches us to pray -And, how praying with the church is an essential part of spiritual formation.

Breaking The Spell

I just finished reading a review of Breaking The Spell: Religion As A Natural Phenomenon.  This is, as it were, a book from our opponents, however, the review piques my interest and I'm likely to get a copy.  I want my faith to be vigorous and strong so subjecting myself to arguments against said faith, seems to me, can be helpful in that pursuit.  Take time to look at the review.  I can get the book for you but Amazon's discount is good (37%), just factor in the shipping costs and make a decision.

What if evangelism meant just being yourself?

Wouldn't it be great if you could communicate the good news without having to become a spiritual salesperson?

What if...
  • you didn't have to make a speech in order to witness?
  • you could use everyday experiences to nudge others closer to Jesus?
  • the things you're already doing counted as evangelism?

This isn't another program or pitch. It's a handbook on how to make real connections with the people formerly known as lost.

Think of it as evangelism for the rest of us.

Embracing Grace

Embracing Grace image: New book by Scot McKnight.  Definitely worth reading.

Here's a good review of the book but please, if you would, ignore my friend's subtle attempts to get you to buy it from Amazon.  Yes, I know it is Christmas and some of your ill-informed relatives will no doubt get you a gift certificate to Earth's largest bookstore but maybe you could just buy some DVD's or some toiletries.
New book by Scot McKnight.  Definitely worth reading.

SLEEPY IN SEATTLE

Another great time with the Off The Map folks.  My first trip to Seattle was fantastic and the book table went well.  I got to meet so many new people.  If you were one of those new people and are checking out my site for the first time be sure and send me an e-mail.  I'll explain how things work.

Here's a simple list of titles I had at the book table.  Seattle Book List

Thanks to Pat and Steve for their help over those two days.

The Revolution Is On!

Revolution image:
The new one from Brother Barna has arrived.  We'll see if this stirs anything up.  Some of those in the circles of emerging will not find this book to radical but keep in mind that our friend George moves in some conservative evangelical circles.  He has the ear (and respect) of many not-so-emergent types.  These folks may have their boats rocked a bit, if not tipped over.

From the back of the book...

Millions of believers have stopped going to church...and chosen to be the church instead.

Research by renowned pollster George Barna points to a hidden Revolution—one that will impact every Christian believer in America. Millions of committed Christ-followers, dissatisfied with the church experience, have stopped attending on Sunday mornings. Why are they leaving? Where are they going? And what does this mean for the future of the church?

In this groundbreaking book, Barna examines the state of the church today—and compares it to the biblical picture of the church as God intended it to be. He documents how and why a new brand of devout “Revolutionaries” is abandoning the local church building while attempting to become the church that Christ commissioned us to be.

This Revolution will challenge you with

  • the straightforward biblical guidelines for the church
  • 7 core passions of a Revolutionary
  • a daring redefinition of the church as we know it.

Maybe you’re afraid of the changes to come. Maybe you’ve been waiting for this moment to arrive. Either way, the Revolution is here.

E-mail me to get yourself a copy for $12.59 (reg. $17.99).
